Notes

1. In answering the related question, respondents in the Detroit study were given a choice ranging from ‘husbands always’ to ‘wife always’.

2. The study concerns a PhD-research project which was carried out in rural Yaan, South-Western China under the supervision of the Department of Household Studies at Wageningen Agricultural University, during 1992–1996.

3. All decisions were equally weighted in the analysis. When a decision was usually made by the wife, she was scored 1 and her husband scored 0. When it was usually made by the husband, he was scored 1 and his wife scored 0. When decisions were usually shared, each spouse was attributed 0.5. A wife and husband’s decision-making index (DMI) is calculated as the actual number of decision values multiplied by 13, and then divided by the total number of decisions made.

4. These questions were preceded by several questions which referred more specifically to present and past employment behaviour, to perceptions and motivations of non-participation in the labour-market, and were specifically directed to each distinguished group. All interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and recoded twice, reaching an agreement level of about 90%. Responses were analyzed in a qualitative way, searching for common sense notions about gender, motivations for having no desires for change, or for having no conflicts, the nature of impediments, and strategies for change. In addition, if there were a sufficient number of responses available, comparisons were made as to class, gender, and the employment status of the wife.
